On 5th October 2021, United Spanish Latin American Welfare Centre (United) and Mercy Palliative Care collaborated to organize a Palliative Care info session.
The topics were: Signs of deterioration and the Mercy Palliative Care program.
Mercedes Prieto, Acting Nurse Unit Manager, McCulloch House Supportive and Palliative Care Unit Monash Medical Centre, Rosalind Vincent, Community Development Worker, Mercy Palliative Care and Debora Packer, Social Worker, Mercy Palliative Care presented the seminar to the participants. Mercedes presented in Spanish, and Rosalind and Debora spoke in English.
Information delivered in language
The session was open to staff of United including volunteers, admin staff and support workers. All the participants were interested in the topic and recognized the importance of knowing about palliative care.
“It was a fantastic session! We feel strongly about the relevance of having this information provided to us in our own language. This makes it easier to transmit to clients, family, friends,” said Marcela Aponte, Volunteer & Social Support Coordinator.
Others to benefit from session
Marcela hopes to use the recording of the session to run a second information session for staff that missed out. The participants remarked that the session was very relevant to their work in delivering aged care services and support to the Australian Spanish-speaking community.
